When the monsoon breaks over the Western Ghats, the hills behind the Karnataka coast come alive with water. Streams swell, hidden falls appear, and the famous cascades thunder at full power. There's no better time to chase waterfalls near Mangalore than during and just after the rains. This guide covers the best waterfalls in coastal Karnataka and the Ghats, when to see them, how to stay safe, and which ones make an easy day trip.

When to go: monsoon timing

Almost every waterfall here is seasonal, fed by monsoon rain rather than year-round glaciers or big rivers. That shapes everything:

Peak flow: during and just after the monsoon (roughly July to October). This is when the falls are at their most powerful and the surrounding forest is vivid green.
By late winter and summer, many smaller falls slow to a trickle or dry up entirely.
The trade-off is that monsoon travel means rain, mist, leeches on forest trails and slippery rock — so the fullest falls are also the trickiest to reach.

Day-trip-friendly falls

These are more accessible and better suited to a comfortable day out:

Sirimane Falls — near Sringeri, a pretty, approachable waterfall with a pool area, popular with families and one of the easier falls to reach. A lovely pairing with a visit to the Sringeri Sharada Peetham.
Abbe / Abbey-style roadside falls — several smaller cascades in the Malnad can be seen close to the road with only a short walk, ideal when time or mobility is limited.
Falls around Agumbe — the Agumbe area has a cluster of cascades within reach of the village, though some require guided forest walks.

For the more adventurous

These reward effort with drama, but need fitness, time and often a local guide:

Barkana Falls — one of the tallest in Karnataka, plunging in a spectacular single drop near Agumbe. The classic viewpoint involves a trek, and the falls are at their best in the monsoon.
Onake Abbi Falls — a dramatic fall in the same Agumbe forest belt, reached on a trail through rich rainforest.
Bandaje Falls (Bandaje Arbi) — a stunning cascade in the Charmadi Ghat area, reached by a proper trek that's best done with guides and in the right season.

Because trails, permissions and safe access to these change with the season and forest-department rules, always check locally before setting out — and never attempt a remote fall alone in heavy rain.

Safety first

Waterfalls are beautiful and genuinely dangerous. Every monsoon brings avoidable accidents. Please:

Never swim or wade above a fall or near the lip — currents are deceptively strong and rocks are slick.
Watch for sudden surges. Rain upstream can raise water levels fast, even when it's dry where you're standing.
Keep off wet, mossy rocks near the edge; they're lethally slippery.
Respect barriers and warning signs, and follow the advice of local guides.
Go early — many falls involve a walk, and you want daylight for the return.
