Blue-Flag Beaches of Karnataka: What They Are & Which to Visit
If you've been researching beaches on the Karnataka coast, you'll have seen two of them described as "Blue-Flag" beaches — Padubidri and Kapu, both near Mangalore. But what does that label actually mean, and is it worth planning your beach day around? This guide explains the Blue-Flag standard and what to expect at Karnataka's two certified beaches.

What is a Blue-Flag beach?
The Blue Flag is an international eco-certification awarded to beaches (and marinas) that meet a strict set of standards, run by the Foundation for Environmental Education. To earn and keep the flag, a beach has to satisfy criteria across several areas:
- Water quality — regular testing to ensure clean, safe bathing water.
- Environmental management — proper waste disposal, clean sands and protection of the local ecosystem.
- Safety and services — lifeguards or first-aid provision, clean toilets, drinking water and disabled access.
- Environmental education — information for visitors about the local environment and how to protect it.
In short, a Blue Flag is a reliable signal that a beach is clean, well-managed and set up for visitors — which is why they're especially popular with families. India has a growing number of Blue-Flag beaches, and Karnataka is proud to have two of them.
Padubidri Beach
Padubidri, between Mangalore and Udupi, was among the first Indian beaches to earn the Blue Flag. It's known for being spotlessly clean, calm and family-friendly, with good facilities — walkways, seating, clean toilets, showers and safe, well-marked areas. It's also famous for its annual international kite festival, when the sky fills with colour.

Kapu (Kaup) Beach
Kapu pairs its Blue-Flag beachfront with one of the coast's most photogenic landmarks — a handsome 19th-century lighthouse on a rocky headland, which you can often climb for a sweeping view of the shoreline. The certified stretch of beach is clean and well-serviced, and the lighthouse and rocks make it a memorable spot.
- Great for: the lighthouse view, dramatic rocks and a tidy beachfront.
- Facilities: well-maintained, with the added draw of the lighthouse.

Facilities and family-friendliness
Because they're certified, both beaches offer what many Indian beaches don't: clean toilets and changing areas, drinking water, marked safe zones, waste management and, importantly, a general standard of upkeep and safety oversight. That makes them a comfortable choice for families with children and older travellers, who'll appreciate the facilities and the calmer, managed environment.
Swimming safety
A Blue Flag means a beach is clean and well-managed — but it does not mean the sea is always safe to swim in. The Arabian Sea along this coast can have strong currents and rip tides, and conditions change with the tide and season. So:
- Only swim where and when it's marked safe, and follow lifeguards and warning flags.
- Keep children close and within shallow, patrolled areas.
- Avoid the sea entirely during the monsoon, when it turns rough and dangerous regardless of the beach's certification.
- Watch the rocks at Kapu — they're slippery and the water around them is powerful.
